八代市の熊本総合病院は、今回の地震で大きな揺れに見舞われました。

地震発生時は手術が4件行われていて、このうち腹部の手術をしていた部屋に設置されたカメラには、医療機器が激しく揺れ動く中、医師らが患者を守ろうと覆いかぶさる様子や、看護師が避難ルートを確保するために入り口の扉を開ける様子などが映っています。

病院によりますと、4件の手術はいずれも無事に終えることができたということです。

(lived in Japan for a few years and one of my core memories for the time was when I was assisting with an English immersion class. The class was on the 3rd or 4th floor of an office building and suddenly there was an earthquake. The way the Japanese instructors instantly moved to open the classroom doors (I assumed to make sure they didn't get jammed shut by the building shifting) like it was instinctual will stick with me forever. )

おそらく、こうした事態を想定した訓練を受けていたのだろう。そして、あの位置が医師たちにとっても患者にとっても最も安全な場所だったのだと思う。あの体勢なら、動いた医療機器が医師たちにぶつかっても、頭ではなく背中で受け止めることになるからだ。
